Joining and Taking part

The Marquess of Winchesters regiment is an organization of enthusiasts who gather together throughout the country to re-enact events of the English Civil War. We have presented many spectacular afternoons of entertainment for thousands of spectators since 1972, to the considerable benefit of many Charitable Organizations. The Marquess of Winchesters regiment is a non-profit making Society. It relies for it's existence upon a contribution towards its expenses at each muster and the annual subscription paid by it's members. Recruits are always welcome to our regiment, whose membership is nation-wide. Winchesters Introductory Membership scheme is open to those wishing to sample our events without further commitment.

The regiment is made up of families, couples and singles with a range of ages from 3 years to, lets just say, retirement age! It's great fun and you get to take part in historical events up and down the country.

Including subsidised clothing which can be bought over a period of time from the regiment we do our best to ensure you can easily enjoy your new hobby with the minimum of expense.

So what happens at an event?

Every display is different, but it is usually best to arrive on the evening before the event to pitch tents etc. and to allow an opportunity for relaxation and socializing.

If the event is organised by Winchester's Regiment, a request for help in setting up the display, campsite etc. will have been made in our newsletter. In such cases it is always appreciated if members who are able to arrive early and provide assistance.

In the morning of each day of the event we issue clothing and equipment at 9.00am, and from 10.30 until 11.30 we practice the drill that will be needed for the display. Between drill and our public appearance we are free to enjoy ourselves.

Most of our displays take place between 11am and 5pm, afterwards the equipment is carefully stored and we are again free to enjoy ourselves in a sociable fashion.
